A botox treatment is a simple, non-surgical procedure that smoothes lines that developed over time. What is being injected is a natural, purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Very low doses of Botox are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the overactive muscles that cause lines to form. The muscles into which BOTOX were injected become "relaxed", thus reducing the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. The results are dramatic and apparently within days. These wrinkles are termed dynamic wrinkles because they come on only with muscle action.

Cosmetic Indications
BOTOX is primarily used to eliminate the wrinkles in the forehead, brow area and crow's feet around the eyes. The effects of botox are confined to the injected region; it does not travel throughout the body.

BOTOX's onset and duration of action
Action of the drug begins in 2 days, peaking at 10 days and lasts for 4-5 months. We generally advise a follow-up at one week and four months, for top-ups.

FAQ1: Are the effects of BOTOX lasting?

In theory, it is not lasting. But in practice some effects linger.

It has been shown that with BOTOX done back to back (3 times a year) for 2-3 years, the target muscles become weakened "permanently".

Thereafter, much less BOTOX would be needed each time or the periods between follow-ups lengthen considerably. Hence it gets more and more lasting to approximate "permanent".

FAQ2: Are the wrinkles going to come back with a vengeance once BOTOX has faded?

Absolutely NOT! They go back to the original state or perhaps slightly improved after 4 months when the BOTOX has worn off.

There is evidence to suggest long term improvements after even one BOTOX treatment. There are long term improvements to fine lines and skin texture that cannot be explained by the muscle blocking action alone. Perhaps without the background muscle tone on the face, some degree of healing takes place, such that fine lines disappear.
